Southern Shores 2009-2030

SCMG has a close working partnership with South Coast NRM Inc., the regional group for natural resource management on the South Coast of Western Australia. The Implementation of Southern Shores project has provided SCMG with a number of opportunities to gather stakeholders and community members to discuss coastal management issues, develop strategies and plans and implement on-ground works at coastal sites, and undertake education and awareness raising activities.

Regional Coastal Management Forum, Bremer Bay

Bremer forumThis forum in November 2006 provided the opportunity for stakeholders and community members to discuss issues and topics affecting coastal and marine management across the South Coast Region. Outcomes included:

  • information for inclusion in the review of Southern Shores and update of the South Coast Strategy for NRM;
  • key topics for discussion at the Community Coastal Forum that preceded the 4th WA State Coastal Conference in Denmark in 2007; and
  • information to link into the new ideas for initiatives for community groups to undertake onground projects and activities in a collaborative approach across the coastal and marine zone.

Sustainable Facilities Project, Starvation Bay, Shire of Ravensthorpe – implementation of community driven coastal management activities such as camping area delineation, rehabilitation of degraded areas and the provision of sustainable recreation facilities in accordance with the Local Government Coastal Management Plan and the guiding strategic principles contained in Southern Shores.

Wilson Inlet / River Boating and Recreation Facilities Plan, Shire of Denmark – a joint initiative between the Shire of Denmark, DPI and key stakeholders such as recreational and commercial boating users of the Wilson Inlet area to collectively plan a sustainable boating strategy for this popular and fragile estuary environment.

Integrated Coastal Plan, Fisheries Beach, Shire of Jerramungup – aligned with the principles of holistic coastal zone management, this project involved coastal users, government agency, industry and the Shire of Jerramungup to plan for sustainable activities, including rehabilitation of degraded areas and implementation of coastal management infrastructure in a highly valued location in Bremer Bay.

Education and Awareness Raising
– working with schools on an ‘adopt-a-beach’ and marine science programmes; providing information and displays at local shows and forums; involving schools students in tree planting in dunes at popular recreational areas.

Review of Southern Shores
– the region’s guiding coastal strategy was reviewed in 2008-09 to document achievements since the original Southern Shores was published in 2001. Gaps, emerging threats and issues, changes in community values and priorities for future action were identified. The review process also ensured integration of Southern Shores 2009-2030 with other regional, state and national coastal zone planning and management frameworks, and identifed options to attract and direct investment in the future.
