Community Engagement "Southern Shores" Targeted Projects

The "Community Engagement “Southern Shores” Targeted Projects" project (South Coast NRM 11SC-C122) allowed SCMG to focus on two key issues:

  • Morley Beach, Wilson InletProtecting Shorebirds
  • Managing Vehicles in the Coastal Zone

Protecting Shorebirds activities included region-wide projects encompassing a regional shorebird survey in 2012 and 2013 involving many stakeholders, volunteers and members of the public. Material purchases were also provided to meet locality-specific needs for on-ground protection works for shorebirds such as Code Off-road: Denmarktemporary fencing, community awareness and training of volunteers.

The South Coast Vehicle Working Group subcommittee of SCMG oversaw the development of Code Off-road products and events. Managing Vehicles in the Coastal Zone activities resulted in the production of two Code Off-road brochures, with internal maps specific to the Denmark and Albany areas (with other areas to be completed at a later date).

The brochure was completed at the guidance of the South Coast Vehicle Working Group subcommittee of SCMG. The Code Off-road brochures were developed with the City of Albany, Shire of Denmark, Department of Parks and Wildlife Frankland and Albany districts, Albany 4WD Club, Peaceful Bay Progress Association, Parry Beach Voluntary Management Group and Lowlands Coastcare Group.

An initial print run was commissioned of the foldout design of 3000 Denmark and 5000 Albany brochures. An A3 version of each has also been produced to facilitate web-based download and further print runs. The brochure has been made available free of charge from land managers, visitor centres, 4WD equipment outlets and mechanics. Feedback has been very positive.

The project was delivered by South Coast Management Group, on behalf of South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc. and the Caring for our Country, Business Plan 2011-12 between 1 July 2011 and 30 June 2013.
